Nowadays, technological advancements and innovations are evolving rapidly, resulting in unlimited communications with access to information anywhere and anytime. Automation technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are increasingly replacing human labor. These developments have irrevocably changed the patterns of trade, service, consumption and production. The world was introduced to new types of businesses, most prominently the rise of E-Commerce. On the other hand, if traditional businesses cannot adapt to these changing circumstances brought on by new technologies and innovations, they would be left behind.
The Ministry of Commerce recognizes the importance of these changes which affect economic stability in Thailand and the Ministry focuses on strengthening Thai economy both in the short term and long term. These works include negotiating the Regional Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP), exploring the possibility of negotiating the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and preparing to resume a free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with the European Union. The Ministry also supports E-Commerce adaptation for entrepreneurs at all levels and established the Joint Public and Private Sector Consultative Committee (JPPSCC) as a platform for deliberation on various issues concerning trade and investment, including fostering higher export performance.

Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) is a private organization set up under the Thai National Shippers’ Council Act B.E. 2537 (1994). TNSC has fulfilled its roles as the representative organization for Thai exporters to protect their interests and develop competencies by increasing efficiency and reducing costs in logistics and supply chain management for members and Thai entrepreneurs. Throughout these 25 years, under the steering of each former Chairman, TNSC has been promoted and accepted by the government and private sectors, both domestically and internationally, to be the representative of Thai exporters with the objective to push forward, promote and resolve any obstacles, whether it is laws, regulations, trade facilitation, logistics and supply chain management, including training and capacity building in the area of international trade. All activities are geared toward the benefits of the export sector and Thailand’s economy, and consequently TNSC are accepted by both government and private sectors both domestically and internationally.
Over the past 3 years, global economy and Thailand’s economy have slowed down considerably as resulted from domestic and international factors such as United States-China trade war, geopolitical tension, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Brexit), political instability, disruptive technology. These factors affects trade policy uncertainty, global trade and investment, including business confidence that are plummeting. It is generally agreed that the global economic slowdown in 2019 is worse than the research institutions have expected. Consequently, the IMF and the central banks in each country have gradually reduced their expectations of global and national economic growth since the end of 2018 to the present.
There are many risks the world is facing in 2020, as a result of what happened in the last year. Although United States-China trade is resolving, Brexit is more imminent and the upcoming United States elections that affects political change, the global economic trend is expected to grow at the slower pace in 2020.
TNSC continues to project problems and obstacles that Thai exporters are encountering to the government and related agencies and set out an international trade promotion strategies for the cooperation between public and private sectors. The strategies are 1) opening up new trading markets and negotiating free trade with important partner countries 2) promoting international trade development through e-commerce platform 3) enhancing the readiness and capability of personnel and workforce in accordance with the current trade context 4) developing infrastructure and upgrade logistics efficiency 5) building financial stability and exchange rate and 6) updating regulations and laws coherent with the current economy so that “exports” as the key driver for Thailand’s economy to function efficiently.
Furthermore, TNSC participates in meetings and provides recommendations regarding the development and improvement of trade facilitation and the development of logistics management system, including international shipping problems affecting international transportation costs and competitiveness of Thai exporters. TNSC also continues to promote and push forward Thailand to be the “Trading Nation”. That further need closer cooperation from all aspects; finance and fiscal, investment promotion, trade agreements, maintaining a balanced international relations and trade partners, improving regulations, tax transparency, effectiveness of government, productivity development in agriculture, production and services, labor and human resource development, increasing business value through innovation, logistics management, trade facilitation and doing business and digital system development for economy and society, to drives the strategies to achieve its objective.
Since the founding, TNSC will not be able to carry out its duties and objectives without the support of the members, Ministry of Commerce and alliances both in the public and private sectors.
On behalf of Thai National Shippers’ Council, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all our alliances both the government and the private sectors for supporting TNSC throughout the years. Furthermore, I would like to thank all members for the trust in our operation and the support to push forward Thai economy to achieve prosperity, stability and global competitiveness.
